８／９〜１０にダウンタウンのカリフォルニアマーケットで開催された Unique USA LA Summer Market 。（イベントが開催されてからかなりの時差が生じております＾＾；）

今回のお目当ては、Sugar Pie Hone Bunsという義理兄姉夫婦のパイ屋さん。

荷物の搬入や設営のお手伝いをしたので、イベントが始まる前の準備を体験できました。

いつもはお客さんとしてしか参加した事がなかったので、舞台裏を見る事ができて感激☆

今回は、食べやすいようにハンドパイを販売しましたが、

普段はWhole Pieを作っています。

 パイはあまり食べませんが、Michelleの作るパイは新鮮な口当たりが好きで、一人でも
Whole Pieを食べてしまいそうになります＾＾

メニューは、旬のフルーツによって決まるので、季節に合わせて変わりますので、
ウエブサイトでご確認ください♪

イベント会場のあちらこちらに設置された写真ブースや、写真のナイスな背景になりそうなWallpaperに大興奮。

出店されているお店を見るだけじゃなくて、他にも楽しめる要素があるのは嬉しい。

今回の出店数はいつもより少なく、新しいお店がほとんどだった気がする。

次はホリデーショーなので、また賑わうのでしょう。

かぎ針編み / すいか

先週は３０℃を超える暑い日が続きましたが、

今週は２０℃台に落ち着いて過ごしやすくなりそうですね＾＾

昨日は、前から気になっていたソーイングクラスに参加してきました。

場所はオールドトーランスのmomen plus。

オーガニックコットン生地や日本のデザイナーの生地などなど、

カラフルな生地で囲まれたお店はとっても居心地が良くって、

どんな作品を作ろうか考えるのが楽しくなりました♪

クラスが始まる前に、表地と裏地とストラップのデザインを選びます。

材料は、お店から買うのが条件で、

レッスン料は２時間のベーシックトートバッグで＄７。

私が選んだデザインで、糸代、接着芯地代などを入れて、＄３０ほど。

生地を測って裁断、アイロンがけをして、仮止め開始。

まっすぐミシンがけをするのって、む、難しいぃ〜〜。

ミシンがけの速度は、足ペダルで調整するのですが、

先生や、他のベテラン生徒さんのかけるミシンの音はお上品で

ゆっくりと優しい音。

私の音は、ズダダダダダダ〜〜！！！！！！！と

せわしなく力強い笑　

ともこ先生が丁寧に教えてくださって、

楽しい２時間はあっという間におわりました。

レッスン中に小学生の時の家庭科の時間に

初めてミシンを触ったのを思い出しました。

糸が絡んで大変だったなぁ。

男子も女子も、ゴム入りショートパンツを作ったっけ＾＾

家庭科の授業の重要さを最近つくづく実感。

DIY(Do It Yourself)精神を応援する要素がいっぱいのクラスだったんだと。

オリジナルのトートバッグが完成して、ハッピ〜☆

実はリバーシブルなので、ひとつのバッグで

裏と表で違うデザインを楽しめます。裏は薄いグレーの生地にしました。

レッスンの値段もお手頃なので、

またすぐ習いに行きたいです。

将来は、他のものも自由自在に縫えるようになりたいな〜♪

夢は膨らむ・・・＾＾

DIY Valentine's Day Card Day / バレンタインデーのカード作り

先日の日曜日に、カルバーシティのダイアンのお家で、バレンタインデーカード作りをして来ました。それぞれユニークなカードを作ったり、ウエブで見つけたキツネのお菓子を入れる袋を作ったり、ワイワイ楽しい時間を過ごしました。

前にかぎ針編みで作ったハートがやっと役に立った！　手作りのカードもいいね。

先週の金曜日はお休みだったので、アート＆クラフトの日に♪

結婚式のウエディングトッパーをペイントしました。

ペイントをカスタムオーダーすると、＄１２０もするので、作り方のページを見ながら頑張ってペイントしました。

すぐにペインとして終わるかな〜なんて思っていたのですが、ペイントが乾くのを待ったり、デザインを考えながら作業をしたので、作業に結局４−５時間かかりました。

＄１２０のチャージになるのも納得です＾＾；

本人達には似ていないけど、可愛いのですっかり気に入りました☆

Etsy（手作りのものを売るオンラインショッピングサイト）で見かけてから
ずーっと気になっていたDIY Wedding Cake Topper Kit。

ShopSwellGoodsでゲットしました☆

オーダーしてから1週間。シカゴからロサンゼルスまで遠路はるばるやって参りました☆

早く取りかかりたくてうずうず。どんなデザインにしようかなぁ。

一体どこからどう始めれば良いの？？という私のような者のために、
Etsyのサイトには作り方もしっかり載っています。わ〜い＾＾

出来上がりの可愛いアイディア沢山のWedding Cake Topperはgoose greaseで見られます☆

お家でクラフト☆ハートブローチとポンポン

よくPinterstというサイトを使って、色々なアイディアを発見しています♪

かなり有名になったPinterestでは、自分が見つけた画像を、カテゴリー分けして、お気に入りに追加して後から眺めて楽しんでいます＾＾　

Pin itというボタンをサイトから入手するとブラウザーにBookmarkすることができるので、お気に入りがあれば、そのボタンを押せば、簡単に追加できるのです。

他の人がお気に入りに追加した画像も見て追加することができるので、どんどんお気に入りが増えていってしまいます＾＾；　でも楽しくってずーっとずーっと見てしまう、とーってもはまるサイトです。

中でも私のお気に入りは、DIYのコンテンツ。自分で作ってみよう♪のコンテンツです。

そこで発見した♡のシュークリップをアレンジして、ban.do風の♡のブローチを作ってみました。（ただ後ろの金具を安全ピンにしただけ。）やっぱり、本場もんban.doの方がかわい〜！！ま、でも楽しかったので良しとします。

ちなみに黄色のポンポンは、パーティーに使えるかな？と思って試しにダイソーで買って作ってみたものです。７枚重ねだとこのくらいのボリューム。もう少しボリューム欲しいので、もっと重ねるといいかも。

紙の切り方を変えるといろいろなデザインを楽しめることをまたまたPinterestで発見したので、色々試そうと思います♪

Unique LA Holiday Show / ロサンゼルスのローカルクラフトショー

Yesterday and today, there were annual holiday Unique LA craft show events at the California Market Center in Downtown LA. My friend and I arrived just before the event opened, and there were many people already in line.

When we were in the line, free cups of coffee from TIEMAN'S were served by REPURPOSE.

They are a maker of 100% compostable insulated cup. Like they said in their ads, it was not hot to hold the cup even without a sleeve. The coffee was smooth and flavorful.

Admission is $10. Received a free "WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER" tote bag.

This is my 4th tote bags from all the Unique LA I attended : ) Beautiful pattern and compelling slogan represents what the Unique LA is about.

Event takes place at the top of the building. 13th floor I recall.

There are already full of people enjoying the day with friends and family.

Vender "Sire's Crown" selling Wooden frame glasses and sunglasses. I rarely see wooden products made in LA so it felt fresh. 

Other than hand crafted items, you can also find tools and materials you may like for your next craft projects. I bought red and white stripe thread from Paper Pastries.

There are more than shopping you can do to enjoy the event. You can take a holiday photo, attend craft workshops, enjoy unique local foods and complimentary drinks with friends and family. I was there for about 1hour and a half but I probably could have spent a few more hours if I had participated in some of the craft workshops. Arts and craft event makes me think to cherish the time with friends and family and sometime slow down and do some creative activities together. Thank you Unique LA! I'm looking forward to seeing you next year : )

Hope you had a good Friday. Here are eco-friendly greeting cards I found at the Patchwork show last Sunday. These cards are from "Merry Blues Art" and the artist is from Long Beach, CA. I like the fine and soft line drawings with the fun use of colors. This time I had a chance to talk to the creator of the cards, Ana, about the concept of her work and the use of eco-friendly materials and painting methods and process she takes to create her work. She Also taught me that there is a place called Long Beach Depot for Creative ReUse in Long Beach,CA where you can donate unused materials where people come and pick materials for their next art projects. Cool concept! I will visit the place one of these days for sure. Thank you Ann for artist's helpful tips : ) One of the great thing about going to these local craft show is that you get to meet the artists and the creators of the products and talk to them in person. If you missed the show this time, there will be another Patchwork show in Santa Ana on Sunday, Nov 27th!

Patchwork Indie Arts& Crafts Festival in Culver City / クラフトフェスティバル in カルバーシティ

Thankfully it wasn't raining at the craft festival on Sunday (it turned out to be an indoor event.) The event was held at a hip historical area called Helms Bakery District. This area itself is worth a visit. I've been there once for dining at Father's Office but I didn't know it's a nice place for a walk and do window shopping : ) 

Highlight of the event for me was definitely talking to Heidi from Rock Scissor Paper (They offer Fun and Colorful designs with vintage flair.) I'd attended Heidi&Susie's Stationary Workshop at Lala Press organized by Krystina Castella (Instructor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena) in 2008.  The workshop was so educational that I couldn't believe how much business secrets Heidi&Susie were willing to share. I loved the experience. Even though it's been a while since the workshop, Heidi remembered me(really, Heidi? thank you!!)

and she was very kind to share her creative business experience and her continuous passion for arts & crafts with me. Like Heidi, I have so much respect for people who are willing to share their knowledge with others without hesitation. I don't have much knowledge to share but I would like to be sincere and supportive if someone approaches me. 

I got some cool arts&craft pieces at the event. When I finish photographing them, I will introduce them here.

Happy Friday and Relaxing at Home

Happy Friday, Everyone! Thankfully today is my day off so I am starting my day nice and slow, waking up one hour later than usual, eating breakfast at home, reading my favorite blogs, and planning my weekend. I'm thinking of finishing the painting piece I started a while ago. I will post it on this blog when it's done. It's a fun colorful piece inspired by Mary Blair's paintings. 

Those of you who live in LA area, there is going to be a local craft show this Sunday, September 13th (11am - 5pm.) Shops at this events are modern and the level of idea and craftsmanship is excellent. I'm always impressed by their presentation as well as their product ideas. Go there an get inspired!

One week late but here is a photo of a "Diva on a Red Carpet" that me and my friends at work made for company's halloween event. We had so much fun thinking and discussing about what to make and how to make it to win. We ordered a pizza and watch comedy show while we were working on the pumpkin. There were jokes and laughs. 4 of us did showed a great contribution and collaboration and created this fun pumpkin DIVA! It reminded me of the high school days when we all stayed late at school and worked on a float for summer festival at school.Our team also dressed appropriately to go well with the DIVA pumpkin theme. Guess what we were? ......We were paparazzis, stylists, and a fashion designer. Small pumpkins in front of the Diva are actually tangerines disguised as pumpkins . How cute! Hope you had a fun halloween and have a wonderful weekend : )

Upcycled Party Decoration / アップサイクルしたパーティーの飾り

"Upcycle" seems like a recent big trend among craft makers. I thought people came up with the word because it sounds better than recycle but each word has its own meanings.


Upcycling - the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value(from wikipedia.)


Recycling - the process of using used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials(from wikipedia.).


I have a tendency to be drawn to those creative Upcycled crafts. Above is a paper decoration I made using old magazines and product catalogs for my friend at work. Yap, it's upcycled. I am grateful for things I learned in kindergarten. Those things still helps me to enjoy life.


最近リサイクルもですが、アップサイクルという言葉をよく見かけます。リサイクルと言うよりも印象が良いからかな？と思っていたのですが、ちゃんとそれぞれに違う意味があるんですね。


アップサイクル→古いものを新しいものに変換して本来の物から新しい価値を創造する。
リサイクル→アルミ缶から再びアルミ缶を作る。


クラフトフェアでもアップサイクルされたものに、とても魅かれます。上の写真は、会社のお友達が久しぶりに出社する前日に色々なカタログから綺麗な紙の切り抜きを集めて作った輪っか（北海道弁で”輪”です。）アップサイクルです。よく幼稚園か小学生の時に作ったのを思い出しました。

For Polaroid Photo Lovers / ちっちゃいポラロイドマグネット

                                         


Last month, my friend at work had showed me a craft project he wanted to do for mother's day with his 3 year-old daughter.  It's a fun project introduced by a talented graphic designer, Jennifer Kirk at her blog. It's called Tiny Polaroid Magnets at Ambrosia Girl. He shared a couple of magnets later and they all look stunning! They look like cute mini Polaroid photos!  His selections of images were artistic and high quality too. The thin glossy coating on each piece brings the quality much higher. It's a great present for everyone. I rolled up my sleeves and started making them too♪ I can't wait to see smiles of my friends and family!

会社の友達が母の日に娘さんと一緒に作るんだ～と見せてくれたポラロイド風マグネット。グラフィックデザイナーのジェニファーさんのブログで作り方を発見したとの事。完成した作品を見たら、本当に小さいポラロイド写真みたいでかわいい～！写真の上にうっすらと光沢を出す特別な塗装がしてあるのだけど、この効果がもう少し作品の完成度を上げている気がする。素晴らしいプレゼントだと思うので、私も時間を見つけてはコツコツ作成することに♪　喜ぶ顔を見るのが楽しみ！

I made a real quick stop at the Patchwork Indie Arts & Crafts Festival in Santa Ana. It was sunny and there seem to be more people than last year's event.  

昨日サンタアナで行われたパッチワークインディーアーツアンドクラフトフェスティバルに、立ち寄りました〜。天気も良く、去年よりもたくさんの人が来場していました！

たくさんかわいいブースがあったのですが、写真を撮るのは遠慮して、カードだけもらって来ました。皆さんEtsyにて販売しているようです。

Today is a day of Patchwork Indie Arts & Crafts Festival in Santa Ana, CA. 

The event starts from 11am till 5pm. Admission is free. There is a parking within a walking distance. I posted some photos of the event from last year below.

Origami Rose / 折り紙でつくるバラ

One of the things that I enjoy at a Japanese hair salon is to read Japanese magazines. They usually cost more than twice as their cost in Japan, I can't but that often so when I'm at a hair salon, I would go through as many magazines I can. There were cute pages of new style origami art. Simple me is always attracted and excited when I see paper magic. Here are a photo of my first Origami Rose. Looks more like carnation?

日本の美容室に行くと楽しみなのが、雑誌を読む事☆　こちらで買うと、日本の値段の２倍以上はするので、なかなか買えないのでここぞとばかりに数冊一気に読みまくる。先日は折り紙特集発見。ついつい紙細工に心魅かれてわくわくしてしまう単純な私。なかなか難しい。バラというよりカーネーションになったかな？

Unique LA on May 7th and 8th @ Cal Mart/ LAのローカルクラフトフェア

今週末（土曜、日曜両日）、ロサンゼルスのアーティストが集まるUnique LAというクラフトフェアが、California Marketであります。

クラフトフェアといいますが、アパレル、ジュエリー、植物、食べ物などなどいろいろな分野からベンダーが出品します。

出店しているお店はおしゃれでユニークなお店ばかり。さすがUnique LAという名前なだけあります。ブースの飾り付け、店員さんのファッションなどなど楽しめる要素がたくさんのイベントです。スポンサーになっている会社からフリードリンクがもらえたり、入場の時にUnique LA限定のトートバッグがもらえたりします。

この前のOh Joyのworkshopで知り合ったBiancaも出店しているとの事。

初めて行ったときは、California Marketのビルの中ではパーキングが探せなかったので。

Make Shop Live / おしゃれなハンドメイドアドレス帳

お友達のアンジェラが、ローカルのクラフトフェアで発見したかわいいアドレス帳をプレゼントしてくれました♪　嬉しぃ〜！！最近は、めっぽうこういう手作りグッズに弱いです。

実はこのアドレス帳、雑誌についてくるダイレクトメールのアドレス記載事項の部分を切り取って作成されているんです。このアイディア、すごくないですか？感動してしまいました。

Make Shop Liveというロサンゼルスに住むカップルが作成しているようです。

My friend Angela gave me this little repurposed book made by "Make Shop Live" in Los Angeles. It's a cleaver idea to give a second life to direct mail cards from old magazines and even a hotel card keys! How clever!
